School Student Sends PTA a List of 780,000 Adult Websites to Get Them Blocked

Ghazi Muhammad Abdullah, a fifteen year old school boy, has sent a list of 780,000 adult websites which he thinks should be blocked in accordance with Supreme Court’s orders but are still accessible to general internet users in Pakistan.
Abdullah told me that he has sent this list to PTA only because authority had asked him for a list of adult websites. He quotes an authority letter sent to him by Director General, Law and Regulations, as saying:
If there is any specific website that you wish to bring into the knowledge of PTA, it is requested that PTA may be informed of the same accordingly for further necessary action at our end.
Earlier, Abdullah had written letters to PTA, Ministry of Information Technology and Chief Justice of Pakistan to get adult websites blocked in Pakistan. After his repeated requests, and hack attempts on PTA and Supreme Court website PTA decided in principle to ban adult websites in Pakistan and issued directive for ISPs to block access to adult websites.
It was recently revealed that Pakistan ISPs have blocked 13,000 adult websites, while there are more still accessible, according to Abdullah.
Without detailing the criteria or selection process of adult websites, Abdullah, in an email, told me that he prepared this list of 780,000 adult websites with help of friends having expertise in computers. He wished not to disclose their names.
It merits mentioning here that Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan is willing to block access to any number of websites, though they have concerns regarding the overhead involved in process. This is why they are advocating proposed national URL filtering system.

3G Auction Can Attract $ 1 Billion: Governor SBP

The auction of 3G licenses in Pakistan can attract more than one billion dollar as against a minimum target of $850 million, resulting positive impacts on economy mainly to contain a widening fiscal deficit of the country, said Yaseen Anwar Governor State Bank of Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference for the announcement of monetary policy, he appreciated the government efforts for auction of 3G licenses in the telecommunication sector as a positive development could help in containing the potential fiscal slippage.
He said the government’s projected privatization proceeds of $800 million of Pakistan Telecommunication Limited (PTCL) will add handsome financial inflows to the state kitty along with different sources such as issuance of $500 million “euro bonds” and $800 million from Coalition Support Funds.
The telecom sector has been in the limelight again as the sole sector that can prevent the country from economy crisis with inflows of handsome FDI through auction of 3G licenses with host of economic activities.
PTA earlier this month announced the base price of 3G licenses at $ 210 million, with maximum of three 3G/4G licenses to be auctioned in addition to one defunct cellular licenses with base price of $ 150 million.
Analysts predict the maximum value Government can attain for 3G auction wouldn’t go beyond $ 230-250 million if government fails to attract any foreign investor (operator) in the bidding. However, 3G licenses’ price can go significantly high if 2-3 foreign operators get interested in operating in Pakistan.
This increased the government’s involvement in the bidding process, which will be supervised by Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT).
The telecom sector has been major source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the past. In 2005-06, the telecom sector brought US $ 1.905 billion in the country with 54 percent share in the overall FDI, SBP figures showed.
The FDI in the telecom sector continued to fall as it share reached to merely 5 percent in the outgoing fiscal 2010-11.
With the arrival of 3G/4G technology, it is estimated that billion dollar investment will be landing in the private sector with creation of thousands of jobs and allied businesses.

Facebook, Google Warned to be Blocked in India Like China

During a hearing regarding “obscene, objectionable and defamatory” posted on Facebook and Google, the Delhi high court has warned social networking site Facebook and search engine Google that websites can be "blocked" in India like in China if they fail to devise a mechanism to check and remove objectionable material from their web pages.
India wants Facebook, Google, Yahoo and other major internet companies to prescreen user content before it’s uploaded on their websites to make sure that no disparaging, inflammatory or defamatory content ever goes online again.
"Like China, we will block all such websites," Justice Suresh Kait said while asking counsel for Facebook and Google to develop a mechanism to keep a check and remove "offensive and objectionable" material from their web pages.
Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Google India, said the postings of "obscene, objectionable and defamatory" articles and other things cannot be "filtered" or "monitored".
"No human interference is possible, and moreover, it can’t be feasible to check such incidents. Billions of people across the globe, post their articles on the website. Yes, they may be defamatory, obscene but cannot be checked," he said.
He assured the court that if the complainant provides defamatory articles to Google India, then it can use "its good office" in getting them removed by its holding US-based firm.
Additional solicitor general (ASG) AS Chandhiok, appearing for the Centre, objected to the plea of Google India saying the US-based Google Inc has "sufficient mechanism" to know that what is offending material.
Facebook, Google case is being heard by Delhi High Court and is yet to reach a decision.

Japan developing cyber weapon

TOKYO: Japan has been developing a virus that could track down the source of a cyber attack and neutralise its programme, the daily Yomiuri Shimbun reported Sunday.
The weapon is the culmination of a 179 million yen ($2.3 million) three-year project entrusted by the government to technology maker Fujitsu Ltd to develop a virus and equipment to monitor and analyse attacks, the daily said.
The United States and China are reported to have put so-called cyber weapons into practical use, Yomiuri said.
Japan will have to make legal amendments to use a cyber weapon as it could violate the country’s law against the manufacture of a computer virus, the daily said.
In November a computer system run by about 200 Japanese local governments was struck.
In October, Japan’s parliament came under cyber attack, apparently from the same emails linked to a China-based server that have already hit several lawmakers’ computers.
It was also reported that Japanese computers at embassies and consulates in nine countries were infected with viruses in the summer.
Currently, the virus is being tested in a “closed environment” to examine its applicable patterns.

Pakistan is a Safe Heaven for Cyber Criminals

Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) Chief, through a letter (at last) apprised the Federal Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs Minister that in the absence of Prevention of Electronic Crime Ordinance (PECO) Law 2007 (lapsed in 2010), Pakistan had become a safe heaven for cyber criminals and con artists whereas the law enforcement agencies were unable to take legal action against them.
CPLC in its letter said that it receives countless complaints regarding fake calls deceiving citizens into receiving a phony prize, misleading text messages, threatening and harassing through mobile phone calls and messages and so on. However, CPCL said, FIA is unable to take any action against all such crimes due to the absence of PECO.
Letter referenced to an incident in which CPLC received once such complaint from a trader of Jodia Bazaar where the culprits had disappeared after he (trader) transferred Rs 10,000 to them via easy load. Culprits had promised a hefty lottery money to the trader.
After receiving several complains, Sindh CPLC Chief Ahmed Chinoy asked FIA to take up such cases for necessary action as per law. In response to Chinoy’s letter, FIA told him that due to the absence of PECO, they were unable to take any action against the offenders.
Letter that was addressed to the Federal Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs Minister to draw his attention towards the PECO Law 2007, which had been lapsed in 2010.
Urging the federal minister to revoke PECO, letter said that these criminals were intentionally harming the physical, mental and financial position of their victims by using modern telecommunication networks such as internet and mobile phones.

Sony Ericsson to release ‘Super Phone’ with latest technology

Washington: According to a new entry on the official Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) site, Sony Ericsson is getting ready to release the LT28at, a high-end smartphone which the company refers to as “super phone.”
The details on the Bluetooth SIG site are scarce, but LT28at will come with a 13-megapixel camera, LTE support and a 4.55-inch 720p “Reality Display,” all of which puts it somewhere at the top of the company’s current smartphone lineup. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LED Flash and front-facing camera are also on board, of course, but the release date is missing. It’s not too far-fetched to assume we might see SE’s definition of “super phone” in January, at next year’s CES.
